Student Death in Vasai: Teacher Booked for Culpable Homicide After 100 Sit-Up Punishment

The student, identified as 13-year-old Kajal Gaud, passed away at a hospital on Friday, November 14, days after allegedly being forced to perform 100 sit-ups (squats) as punishment for arriving late to class.

While initial social media reports suggested the student was 8 years old and performed push-ups, authorities have confirmed the victim was a Class 6 student and the punishment involved sit-ups.

The Incident

According to police reports and family statements, the incident began on November 8 when Kajal arrived ten minutes late to her school in Vasai East.

The class teacher allegedly punished her and other latecomers by ordering them to perform 100 sit-ups while wearing their heavy school bags.

Kajal’s health deteriorated rapidly after she returned home that afternoon. "She complained of severe pain in her legs and lower back and could barely move," her mother stated in an interview with local media

. The pain escalated over the following days, leading to her admission to a local hospital. As her condition worsened, she was transferred to JJ Hospital in Mumbai, where she succumbed to complications, reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest caused by the extreme physical exertion.

Medical and Legal Response

Medical experts suggest that forcing a child to perform repetitive, high-intensity exercise without training especially while carrying weight

can lead to rhabdomyolysis, a condition where damaged muscle tissue releases proteins and electrolytes into the blood, potentially damaging the heart and kidneys.

The Waliv Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and have since booked the teacher involved under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

"We are awaiting the final post-mortem report to determine the exact physiological cause of death, but the link to the punishment appears evident," a senior police officer stated.
