The Rising Humanitarian Crisis
As winter’s first heavy rains lash the Gaza Strip, makeshift tent camps sheltering displaced families are being inundated turning fragile plastic tarps into leaky coffins and turning muddy ground into swamp-like terrain.
According to Gaza’s Civil Defence, more than 1,500 tents have been flooded due to the torrential rain, affecting hundreds of thousands of already vulnerable people. Many are now left soaked to the bone, their bedding ruined, their belongings drenched.
The Dire Shelter Situation

The Call for Urgent Action
Humanitarian agencies are sounding the alarm: Gaza’s displaced population urgently needs winterized shelter — not just basic tarps, but solid, water-resistant tents or caravans to withstand the harsh, wet months. Al Jazeera+1
Rescue organizations are calling for:
-
Immediate delivery of durable tents and other shelter materials. Al Jazeera
-
Provision of warm clothes, blankets, and mattresses to protect against cold and damp conditions. WAFA Agency+1
-
More flexible aid access for international organizations, to ensure that help reaches the most-affected areas. European Parliament
-
Improved drainage solutions for tent camps, to prevent flooding and water stagnation.
